Turnspeak

Turnspeak is a cognitive technique of propaganda. The turnspeak practitioner attacks an adversary. Then they turn it around and claim that the party being attacked was the attacker. Because the truth is the exact opposite of the information being disseminated it is psychologically difficult to counter and leads to confusion.

Joseph Goebbels is often credited with the invention of the technique. In the 1960’s The Arab League turned it into an art form. Today we see turnspeak frequently used by the religious right as a form of self-victimization. A variation of turnspeak is the use of disingenuous descriptions that seem to conflate opposing positions into advocacy. It’s easier to persuade others to agree with an argument for something rather than against something. For example "pro marriage" and  "protection of marriage" really mean anti-same-sex marriage.  Our fundie-to English dictionary provides more examples.
