HRC's List of Prop 8 Supporters

Submitted by David Hart on Sun, 11/16/2008 - 16:27

Here is the final list of corporate donors in support of Proposition 8.

I noticed that Mike Rogers is currently in touch with one company, a franchisee of an internation corporation. Mike's approach is to encourage the franchiser to:

  1. Repudiate the franchisee's gift
  2. Make a gift in the same amount to an organization fighting for true equality
  3. Immediately add sexual orientation and gender identity to the corporation's non-discrimination policy.

When time allows, I will try to publish information about these companies -- particularly if they are publicly held (in which case, I can refer to the 10K and latest proxy). Ultimately, the goal is to create an email list that concerned citizens can contact. After all, who wants to be the next Bolthouse?

Stay tuned.

"All of these 'christians' should be giving to the poor, helping raise up the underpriviledged"
Who says they aren't giving to the poor? Based on the Christians I know, I'm quite confident that they are.

Also, neither side of this debate will make progress in understanding the other side, unless both sides seek to understand each other's viewpoints on: (1) what marriage truly means, (2) why government should have a role in recognizing marriages, and especially (3) whose rights are being protected when government recognizes and regulates marriage. Without this understanding, conversations will be stuck at the level of name-calling and hurt feelings.

I completely agree with boycotting these businesses. The biggest problem I see is, some of the biggest backers for this measure weren't even in California! We really should have something to restrict financing for state propositions to local funding only. Do I believe in protesting at their places of business? Sure! Not everyone out there will be going to check and see who financed this measure. Do I believe in harassing phone calls/e-mails? No. Perhaps a simple statement of disapproval or that they've lost your business due to this without threats or harassment, but that's it. The biggest thing seems to be that people who funded this don't see it as prejudice or bigotry. Most of them see it as nothing more than 'expressing their religion'. We need to calmly explain why this view really is not accurate. A religious view should not be forcing a government to take away rights from a group. There are states that do have gay marriage. Voting to ban gay marriage should be based on actual numbers or proof that it has caused a negative impact on these states, not 'because my religion states it should be this way'. Also...to those that claim 'it's in the bible'...there's also a nice statement in there from Jesus Christ that states 'all the old laws are revoked. Try reading the New Testament for yourselves sometime instead of just listening to the hate your preachers/pastors/evangelists rant about.

I do not condone anyone using the supporter list to harass or intimidate people. However, I believe it is entirely appropriate to avoid spending my money in businesses owned by supporters. Why would I want to trade where I am not welcomed and accepted?

They're not backing hate, they're backing personal religious beliefs. You lifestyle CHOICE cannot infringe on my freedom of religion. Because gays and lesbians CHOOSE to be different they expect to be given things the same as everyone else? No no no. Sorry. We stand up for our beliefs. Us Christians. We are paying to prevent YOU PEOPLE from destroying our faith by trying to inundate our society with your abhorrent behavior. It is disgusting and a total disgrace that I even have to put up with this tripe. Us Christians are the ones that will win in the end. God judges harshly. He warns you of the consequences of choosing this lifestyle, you don't want to listen... well.

Being gay is not a choice, but being a bigot is. Look up the word. If being gay was a choice, I would choose to be gay if only not to be like the religious bigots like you. According to your "bible" Hate and bigotry will not get you into your heaven. I'm glad to be gay, and a Buddhist (the peaceful, non-bigoted religion). Gay people, don't worry, we will win the law suit and the bigots can go back under their rock.

Why should my friends be denied the civil rights that all the rest of us have because you choose to be religious? If you're so sure god will sort it out in the end, why do you have to impose your religion on everyone else?

I wish more religions still included predestination...seems like that would get you people off our backs.

I looked at this list to make sure that I was not doing any business with any of the companies (I am not). But what really struck me as sad and scary is that--especially in this difficult economy--people are willing to donate $10,000 to back discrimination and hate. Don;t they have better things to spend money on? All of these "christians" should be giving to the poor, helping raise up the underpriviledged--but no, they choose to spend their money on this. I am disgusted.
