Faces of Intolerance: Justin Caster

Submitted by davidhart on Sat, 07/19/2008 - 12:50.

ImageJustin Caster is an actor; he is currently with the Chicago roadshow company of Wicked. Justin Caster is also a bigot. In spite of the fact that he presumably works with a number of gay people every day, Justin Caster donated $18,200 in support of California’s Proposition 8. Proposition 8 is on the November ballot. If passed, it would outlaw same-sex marriage in California.

Justin Caster is certainly entitled to his religious beliefs. However, by supporting Proposition 8, Justin Caster would have those beliefs imposed - by force of law - on everyone else.

I have yet to receive a single, compelling argument that would support the notion that same-sex marriage adversely affects anyone else. Indeed, as Gail Collins pointed out in Yesterday’s NY Times:

After four years, same-sex marriage has also begun to feel normal in Massachusetts. It’s not something that comes up in conversation much anymore. There is no greater force against bigotry than the moment when something becomes so routine that you stop noticing it.

Collins goes on to write:

My 83-year-old mother, who I have always thought of as conservative on matters like sex, has a home helper, Joe Wallace, who is gay. To say they hit it off would be a deep, deep understatement… . My mother has begun to make inquiries about whether anybody is interested in taking her to the next Cincinnati Pride Alive Parade.

Justin Caster already knows better - at least he should. He is in close, intimate contact with many gay people in his theater company. One would think - if not expect - that Justin Caster would know that we are not sick, evil perverts. It’s probably too much to expect Justin Caster to embrace our community for its goodness but not condemning us on religious grounds would at least be a good start.

Its not you excepting others beliefs about gay marriage, Its how you handle it.
And the way you handled it by bashing on this Justin Caster is a sign of weakness.
$18,000 dollars is pennies for what they need to fight against gay marriage.
I dont see a Justin Caster Forum or blog bashing Gays or trying to convince people of his stand.

They Wont respect us anymore or less if we handle it this way

I strongly disagree. I refuse to be a slowly boiled frog. A blog is far less offensive than funding the referendum. If this was to pass, perfectly lawful conduct would be banned solely based on religious prejudice and discrimination. If you were black or Jewish (you could be either or both) and you had a list of people making contributions to the KKK, wouldn’t you out them?

If these people want to contribute to bigoted causes there WILL be consequences. We need tough people to stand up for us.

The blow-hards like Dobson and Perkins have lots of money and get lots of attention. Ann Coulter makes discriminatory remarks on network television and gets invited back. When she uses the term “fag” to a group of senior Repub leaders, they fucking laugh. If you ask me, we have been on defense, acting like perfect little queers, far too long.

GIVE ‘EM HELL DAVID!

Are you referring to the author? Speaking for myself, the hypocrisy is astounding. AFA boycotts McDonalds for donating $20,000 to the gay chamber of commerce. McDonalds’ diversity doesn’t hurt anyone and is in the spirit of tolerance in our society. In this case, the guy makes a donation to a group that is trying to outlaw samesex marriage. This has a direct negative impact on gay people whereas, same-sex marriage has no effect on anyone else. Almost 100% of the opposition to ANY gay rights is championed by the religious right. Their stand is based entirely on religious principles. I have no problem is some pastor want to give a sermon on the evils of homosexuality. I choose to disagree. I DO have a problem, when religious groups try to impose their religious beliefs by passing a law. Now, if you can give me just ONE example of how same-sex marriage harms those who feel it is a sin, that would give me pause. All this time, energy and money wasted on the conduct of two consenting adults. And, please, don’t tell me how this will lead to sex with animals, polygamy, incest, pedophilia or other crimes (which is what the right always does). it’s sheer nonsense unless you want to pretend that you cannot differentiate between those criminal acts and same-sex marriage. If you feel it’s a sin then don’t do it. But don’t try to control others who disagree with those beliefs.

Simply being against gay marriage does not mean he hates gays. That would be the same as saying pro-choicers hate babies.

That’s an incongruous comparison. If someone wants to deprive me of equal protection under the law then I would join in calling them a BIGOT. He is limiting my personal choices. Pro-choice is all about PROTECTING personal choices.

If you truly knew anything about Christianity and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, then you would know that when it comes to choosing between what is right and wrong (what the Bible teaches) versus what a person/s may believe – we must choose the Word of God. As a Christian, we know it was God who created marriage, not man. That is why, in the U.S., for many years it was the church that performed the ceremonies. Just because the world is changing around us (which, by the way, is written about in detail in the Bible), we, as Christians, are instructed by God not to change our beliefs or try and change what the Bible teaches. I am sure you are very aware of what the word bigot means; one who is intolerant of others or others’ beliefs. So when you look closely to the mud you are slinging, you are the one who is being intolerant to what, not only millions of Christians believe, but also to what the Bible teaches. You are totally free to live your life any way you choose but if you want to take an institution that God created (marriage) and change its meaning and purpose (that is clearly contrary to the Word of God) then we have a problem. I do not expect you to understand this position nor do I believe this will change your mind as far as believing what you are doing is going to help you and other gay people, but I do hope you will see clearly that if anyone is being a bigot, it is you.

Let me be the first to clue you in. We live in a secular society. If you think that being gay is wrong, you are free to be celibate if you happen to be gay. If you think that same-sex marriage is wrong then don’t do it. Justin is trying to impose his beliefs on the rest of us. Who is he to say who anyone else can love? justing comes from a wealthy family. Suppose that they decided that interracial or interfaith marriages should be illegal?
