Guidelines for Submitting Content to Tips-Q.com
Brenda Altman
Associate Editor
We encourage and welcome topical article submissions expressing all points of view. "Topical" means generally related to gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender issues. We can only accept articles written in English.
We can only perform cursory editing. Therefore, correct grammar, spelling and style are essential. Our "stylebook" is The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage. Some style issues specific to this website:
The term "gay" applies to both gay men and lesbians. However, either form is acceptable (gays or gays and lesbians). Similarly, either "GLBT" or "LGBT" are acceptable. "Gay" is generally preferred over "homosexual" unless used in a clinical context or as a comparison to "heterosexual." "Queer" is acceptable when not used in the pejorative. Please use neutral punctuation. For example the word gay should not be in quotes nor should the word marriage when used to describe same-sex or gay marriage. Typically "transgender" refers to sexual identity while "transsexual" refers to a person living as the opposite to their biological sex. "Pre-op" and "post-op" are only applicable to transsexuals. Pronouns should be used that are consistent with either a transgender or transsexual person's identity.
When writing articles in response to other articles, please refrain from ad hominem attacks (attacking the arguer rather than the arguments). This site is configured to open external links in a new window. Therefore, you can -- and should -- use links liberally in support of facts or studies without concern for distracting the reader away from your article.
Quoting from copyrighted material must be limited to reasonable "fair use." Please include a link to the original.
Articles may be embedded with images and videos. To preserve bandwidth, we do not host videos; these must be from third party providers like YouTube. Please ensure that autostart is off.
A user account is required to submit articles which are subject to moderation. Unmoderated "contributor" accounts may be provided upon request. Please contact David Hart for more information.
Please note that we do not provide a guest area. All articles are listed in the order approved or submitted. The most recent eight articles appear on the site's front page. The most recent 15 articles are included in RSS syndication. We reserve the right to edit submissions. Cross posting is acceptable providing that you provide a link to the original at the top of the article. This applies to articles originally posted to Tips-Q.com and elsewhere. Please provide brief biographical information as the final paragraph of all article submissions.
Please subscribe to, and monitor, comments to your articles, responding when reasonably necessary.
If you have any comments or questions pertaining to this content submission, please email Brenda Altman.
