Snapple, Sonic & Chipotle Pull Advertising From KRXQ

Submitted by David Hart on Thu, 06/04/2009 - 19:24

The disgraceful comments made on the Rob, Arnie and Dawn in the Morning show, that encouraged violence towards trans-gender children, have had economic consequences, At least three advertisers have withdrawn their financial support.

UPDATE: The Mercury reports that Bank of America, and Verizon have also pulled their advertising.

GLAAD continues to deliver on meaningful advocacy. The following is from the Andy Marra, GLAAD's Senior Media Strategist and appears on the GLAAD Blog.

In the wake of KRXQ radio hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States not apologizing for their offensive comments against transgender children, individuals continue to take action and share their concerns with the station.

You can listen to last week’s segment here and their follow-up to the controversy here.

On June 2, GLAAD issued a Call to Action and today renewed its call for supporters to let KRXQ know that Rob and Arnie should apologize for their remarks. We have also been blogging about this story (here and here).

Business leaders have also become alarmed by last week’s defamatory radio segment and are distancing themselves from the shock jocks and their dehumanizing remarks. Individuals are utilizing social networking tools like Facebook to voice their concerns and alert companies of the harmful diatribe.

At 1:33pm, I received an email from the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. The company is responsible for well, Dr. Pepper and Snapple along with 40+ brands including 7UP, Country Time, Crush, Hawaiian Punch, Mott’s, Orangina, Welch’s and Yoo-hoo.

Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Inc gave us the following statement to share with our supporters:

We found the segment to be offensive and as a result, we are pulling our Snapple advertising from the station.

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.

As far as we know, the beverage company now becomes the second business to pull its advertising from KRXQ as a result of last week’s defamatory and dehumanizing comments against transgender children made by radio hosts Rob and Arnie.

The popular restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill was the first to announce pulling their advertising contract from the station.

Please continue to check back for updates on this developing story.

—————

UPDATE:

At 4:00pm EST, GLAAD spoke with SONIC Corp, the largest chain of drive-in restaurants in the country. SONIC confirmed they pulled all of their advertising from KRXQ as a result of the offensive comments made on the “Rob, Arnie and Dawn in the Morning” show during their May 28 radio segment.

SONIC provided GLAAD with the following statement at 4:45pm EST:

Sonic wants to assure you that the views of this station are in no way related to the views of Sonic. Sonic was alerted to the May 28th segment only yesterday and immediately began researching the segment, show and Sonic’s planned advertising on the station. SONIC in no way condones violence toward children and does not wish to be associated with media content that condones or promotes such activity in any way.  We have decided to immediately withdraw advertising from this station and have notified the station of our decision.

SONIC now joins Snapple and Chipotle in their removal of advertising on KRXQ.

If you want your advertising to enlarge its publishing area you should register to one of the cpa programs and explain there what your advertising should be about. You'd be pleased of the results.

Useful text just about this good post. Some students go to the custom writing service and buy essays or custom written essay just about this good topic.

WOW people in this counrty is soo easly butt hurt over some lame ass reasons... I respect Rob and Arnie SOO much more now because they will say what the rest of us dont have the balls to say.. If your gonna be a certain way then you need to learn that not everyone is gonna accept you and your gonna have to deal with the consequences.. If you dont like what they have to say no one is holding a gun to your head you can turn the channel..

To the poster below, if you are in fact gay then you must have had it pretty fucking easy to not have an ounce of sympathy for transgender kids.  Understand this, these companies were informed of this segment.  THEY listened to it and the follow-up and then decided if this is what they were paying for.  It definitely wasn't.  Their money, their call. You have every right to contact them and tell them that you'll boycott them - go ahead.  Rob and Arnie did this to themselves.  They could have apologized and set the record straight.  They didn't do that.  In fact, they had the audacity to make this out to be a freedom of speech issue.  It's not.  If I said what they said to just one person where I work, there's a big chance I'd get fired.  Nobody is stopping them from expressing their opinion, but nobody is obliged to pay them for their opinions.  Rob and Arnie have nobody to blame but themselves, they had an opportunity to sort out this mess on their follow up show and they blew it.  I feel sorry for Dawn because she's going to suffer for the incompetence of her colleagues - and that's not fair.

It is important that those of us who support Snapple, Sonic and Chipotle's choice to pull advertising from that station let those advertisers know it.

Call or email those companies and let them know you approve of their actions!

Good work. I contacted Wells Fargo today, but I have not yet heard back from them. I plan to stop banking with them if they do not stop advertising on KRXQ. I have also contacted Mr. Geary at the station two days in a row, but he has not returned my calls. We must not tolerate such hateful behavior toward children by anyone.
