NOM Provided Doug Hoffman Campaign $112,736.75
The anti-gay group, National Organization for Marriage, donated $112,736.75 to Doug Hoffman's unsuccessful campaign to represent New York's 23rd congressional district. NOM's funds were donated as independent expenditures which means that they were not required to be reported by the Hoffman campaign. To put this in perspective, the largest reported contributions to Hoffman were made by Club for Growth for a total of $132,929. Nevertheless, NOM's total falls considerably short of the promise made by Brian Brown, NOM's executive director, to provide Hoffman with a minimum of $150,000.

The special election was held to replace Congressman John McHugh who was appointed Secretary of the Army by President Obama. The contest gained national attention when a number of far right GOP leaders endorsed Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman over Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava. These included Sarah Palin, Dick Armey and Rick Santorum. A few days before the election Scozzafava dropped out and endorsed Democrat Bill Owens, who went on to win the seat,
