Poor, Poor Donald Mendell

Submitted by David Hart on Fri, 10/30/2009 - 13:21

Don MendellUpdated 10/31, Maine's Yes-On-1 campaign to ban same-sex marriage is short on coherent argument and long on victimization. Donald Mendell is a guidance counselor at Nokomis Regional High School in Maine. Mr. Mendell, who appeared in a Stand for Marriage Maine Commercial, made some extraordinarily ignorant and homophobic remarks in a letter to the editor of the Bangor Daily News. His polemic included the following:

UPDATE: Donald has "hired" a lawyer.

Sex education is not the spearhead of the “homosexual marriage and behavior is equal to that of heterosexuality” message. It’s being done through the teachers who are forming clubs and organizing activities that purport to speak to harassment, but in fact are aggressively promoting an equality-of-behavior agenda with children in our schools. A club-approved poster, asking “When did you decide that you were straight?” has been placed, for the past two years, in our school hallway less than 50 feet from the main entrance. Try to read the words “When did you decide that you were straight” as might 13-year-old ninth-graders their first day of high school.

Aside from the fact that this has absolutely nothing to do with marriage, this is the all too familiar dog whistle that gays are out to recruit or indoctrinate your kids. The underlying message is that this could turn your kids into queers. Suggesting that he is opposed to "equality of behavior" further demonstrates an inability to appreciate the simple fact that homosexuality is not a choice nor a "behavior." Sexual orientation is the attraction to males, females, both or neither. Sexual orientation is not a choice. As a guidance counselor, Mr. Mendell should know better.

It begs the question of how Mr. Mendell could possibly serve all of the students that he is responsibel for.  Mendell seems to be wed to notions that are at odds with his own professional organization, the American Counseling Association, as well as the American Association of School Administrators, the American Federation of Teachers, the American Psychological Association, the American School Health Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, the National Association of Social Workers, and the National Education Association.

Yesterday, Marc Mutty issued the following statement on behalf of Stand for Marriage Maine:

Don is a high school guidance counselor and licensed social worker. His appearance in the television ad prompted a complaint to the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation – requesting that his license to practice social work in the state of Maine be stripped away – simply because of his personal opinion on marriage.

This is false. I haven't seen the complaint nor do I know who filed it. However, this has nothing to do with Mendell's views on gay marriage. Rather, this is about Mr. Mendell's apparent views on sexuality.  Mendell's professional competency is very much called into question if he thinks that a 13 year old could be turned gay by a sign asking when he decided to be straight.

Mutty goes on to say:

This attack proves that a “YES” vote next Tuesday is about much more than protecting marriage. It is also about preserving free speech, religious liberty and right of conscience and about what is taught to children.

That, too is a lie! In no way whatsoever does recognition of gay marriage have anything to do with free speech or religious liberty. As for what is taught to students, diversity appreciation is being provided in Maine's schools as it is in thousands of school districts across the nation. Tolerance is a component of a civilized society. Sexuality and sex education are not the issue. That is something that a parent has the right to opt out of.

Mutty goes further:

This threat to Don and his family’s livelihood is proof that those who demand marriage be redefined seek to punish and silence those who disagree.

Again, false. This proves that one person questioned Mendell's competence. Moreover, Mutty cannot separate himself from the National Organization for Marriage talking points. Marriage is not redefined by allowing gay couples to wed. Mutty and his employer, the RC Diocese of Portland, seek to ban same sex marriage to prevent an official affirmation of the acceptability of homosexuality for religious reasons.

Maybe when you learn that the original complaint works for the husband of Sherry Gould, who made the No on One ad in a classroom at Nokomis HS. The complaint was made by Ann Sullivan, a lesbian social worker at Newport Elem School. Her principal/boss is Randy Gould..husband of Sherry.  Does this smell like a conspiracy?  Ann S does not work at Nokomis with Mendell, they have no contact and share no clients. How would she know what is going on at Nokomis, what kids there are saying, unless there was some sort of conspiracy?   It smells really bad....

This man has the right to voice his opinion, do you think he has seen students who question their sexuality? Why is it that no one has ever filed a complaint on him prior to this lesbian. Because he disagreed with the "teacher of the year" and her gay buddies on this vote,  because he feels a child has a better chance at a good life with a mom and a dad, because he believes in traditional marriage...does that make him a bad person?  He has won awards, been honored for his work and is well known in this district and statewide for his good work and innovative ways to keep kids in school.

And yes, Leslie, this is an attack from the No on One side. If you don't agree, then you are labeled a bigot. Grow up.

I agree that Mr. Mendell is free to express his opinion.  By the same token, those offended by that opinion are free to complain.  Whoever filed the complaint had every right to do so.  More kabuki from Yes on 1.  Same as it ever was.

The Yes on 1 folks are also trying to assert that this "attack" on Mendell comes from No on 1 or No on 1 supporters -- trying to paint us with their same lying, deceitful brush. I am so FED UP with their whining and as you said, David, constant playing of the victim card. It is getting really, really old.

As I wrote over on Pam's blog:

MEMO TO YES ON 1 PEOPLE: YOU ARE TRYING TO STRIP A LARGE GROUP OF MAINE CITIZENS OF THEIR CIVIL RIGHTS. DO YOU REALLY EXPECT ME TO FEEL BAD ABOUT WHAT YOUR YOUR HOMOPHOBIC SPOKESPERSON DON MENDELL MIGHT BE GOING THROUGH? OH BOO HOO.

I have just about run out of patience with them.

Mr. Mendell has EVERY right to be able to freely express his opinion on any subject.....public or otherwise.

To suggest that he should lose his job as a counselor simply for expression his opinion on an issue that is up for vote in his state is ludicrous and is a slap in the face to the democratic process and free speech.

I look at the level members of the LGBT community are willing to sink to now and wonder to myself what will happen when they have the law to back them up.

Free speech is for everyone. Not just people who agree with you.

Vot YES on 1

Bravo Jake! Yes on 1

In addition, as is already attested to, a yes vote on 1 does not take away the many rights already afforded to homosexuals in Maine.

On another note, same sex marriage is a sham for the following reasons:

1. Logically the parts don't add up.

2. Sexual behavior with a same sex person is paramount to treating the one you profess to love as an object for pleasure....it also leaves these relationships open to all kinds of abuses not the least of which is rampant promiscuity (C'mon if you can't be honest with me at least be honest with yourself)

3. People who bear the weight of same-sex attraction have enough to deal with without adding legalized marriage for homosexuals to their burden.

Finally, marriage was instituted by God to be between one man and one woman, for obvious reasons. Setting marriage up between same sex couples opens up a huge can of worms. If we decide we want to be the ones to define marriage where does it end? A man and a boy? A woman and a girl? A man and a girl? A man and a dog? Silly? Society is discussing plenty of things today, never even thought of thirty years ago. Think about that, and if you decide you are not troubled by it…well, you clearly had an awful life and I feel sorry for you.

Pax!
