Same-sex Marriage Might Be DOA in New York

Submitted by David Hart on Mon, 06/08/2009 - 20:54

Hiram MonserrateTwo conservative Democrats who oppose same-sex marriage switched parties today, effectively yielding control of the state Senate. The change in leadership makes it unlikely that the bill passed by the Assembly will come up for a vote before the June 22 deadline. However, this is New York and anything can happen.

The two dissidents were Hiram Monserrate of Queens and Pedro Espada of the Bronx. Monseratte is currently under indictment for attacking his girlfriend with a broken beer glass (classy guy).

Actually, it turns out that Espada is not only a SUPPORTER of same-sex marriage, he's one of the co-sponsors of the bill, and he has announced that he personally would like to bring it to a vote!  So, strangely enough, the State Senate takeover might actually turn out to be good news.  For more details, see the news stories mentioned in the blog post linked via my name here.

According to the list published by NY1 News a few days ago, Espada had said he would vote "Yes" on marriage equality, and Monseratte was "undecided."  But obviously this issue wasn't a high priority for Espada.

L.E. is correct (at least in part) Espada supported marriage equality and Monseratte was a 'likely yes'

I've seen both of the Democratic Senators who sided with the Republicans on lists of Senators who SUPPORT same-sex marraige.(Personally,I'm a Democrat dead set against it).
